The Home Team: God's Game Plan for the Family by Clint Archer
In my weekly
schedule I listen to D6 Family podcasts.
I was listening to an interview with Todd Meadows, How to Equip Parents
to Disciple at Home. Todd said the best
book he had read in a while was The Home Team by Clint Archer. So I immediately went out and downloaded
it. Of course I was thinking this book
will have all the answers I can just give to the parents in the church and
EQUIP them. I loved the premise of team
sports relating to the family – right up my alley.
First let me say
Clint Archer is my kind of author. He is
easy to read and I didn’t want to put the book down. But I’ll warn you – I felt short of God’s
expectations – and I felt convicted. The
hardest parts are the husband/father and the wife/mother chapters. Our responsibilities as parents is HUGE and
time consuming. I promise when you read
the book – you’ll feel wow this is extreme; does the bible really say
this? Could this guy really be interrupting
it correctly? And the tendency you’ll have is to say – well its OK I don’t do
it that way because ….
The children’s part
of the family team – is broken up into two chapters. Little kids and older kids – or little league
and minor league. I found his parenting
advice excellent. There is a harvest of
information and application in these two chapters. Don’t speed read this section of the book –
soak and bathe in it.
He finishes up with
ideas about schools, church, and how others affect and help the family. Food for thought for sure but I found this
part of the book less relevant for my family situation.
I absolutely loved
how Clint wove sports into the text I found it interesting and applicable; of course I love
sports. I recommend reading this
book. Challenge yourself not to make
excuses where you feel convicted. You
want to be a better parent? You want to
raise Godly children? This book will point you in the right direction.
Friends have asked
me Cynthia what’s your secret to parenting 4 children? Well I haven’t followed this book completely,
I haven’t done everything right, I haven’t …… and the list goes on. What have I done – God has been a priority. My children grew up with some devotions,
night time prayers, going to church, seeing the commitment I’ve made to God. Do
we miss church – well yes they all four have played travel sports. There isn’t a magic pill, or a perfect
program to put them in; it requires hard work, love, patience, and lots of
prayer.
Looking for a New
Year’s Resolution – read the book
Nothing short of a blessed inspiration. Thank you.
